I have your words now…

(Dillan and I have been slowly reading all of your comments and messages, and while responding is not always possible, he is very happy to hear from you, and to know that he has reached so many people.)

Have to say I am blown away.  Now I wish I could reply to each and every one of you, but my intuition and reality can be at odds with each other.  Have to sometimes give in to our limits.  Typing is an incredible gift that sometimes takes an enormous effort.  I hope you all know that I have your words now, just as you have mine, and so we are being connected through our typed thoughts, and that has made my world even bigger and better than I could have ever imagined!

  1. Hi Dillan, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. You have inspired me more and more to help my 5 year old son feel comfortable communicating. He knows his phonics and can sound out cvc words, so hopefully typing is something he can use as he gets older as another form of communication.

    • Hi Georgina,

Thank you for writing. Dillan is busy with the end of school, so I’m doing a bit of replying:) We are thrilled that his experience has been helpful to you. I just want to say that those that we know who type to communicate, didn’t necessarily show outwardly that they were literate due to their difficulty in keeping focus and organizing their bodies to intentionally type what they knew or were thinking. So that is not always reliable. There are a lot of impulsive movements, but its not always easy to slow down and move the body the way they want to. It may be helpful for you to read Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method by Soma Mukhopadhyay, or you can go to their website at http://www.halo-soma.org. It’s a great book for understand better how to teach someone with a sensory system so different from ours, and ways to begin building the communication. Hope this is helpful! Wishing you all the best!

  2. Thanks, Dillan, for this update. I received it in my email today, and it made me very happy. I am glad that you can be connected with so many people through your typed thoughts. Keep these updates coming. The progress you are making on your journey is a great encouragement to my wife and me as we attempt to help our non-verbal son learn to communicate. Thank you!

    • Hi, this is Dillan’s mom, Tami. So glad that you are finding Dillan’s posts helpful…now he is very happy too! We are a bit slow getting posts up, but will definitely keep them coming. Hopefully more over the summer. So glad you are working on communication with your son. If you are interested in researching a bit, a good place to start is by reading Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method by Soma Mukhopadhyay, or you can go to their website at http://www.halo-soma.org. Dillan and I are going to try to get more information on his blog about his communication journey in the near future. Hope you come back soon!

  3. Dillan, you cannot believe the joy my family feels from reading your words. My son, who began typing just 7 months ago, is now communicating on an ipad with almost no support. (just someone sitting with him, and saying things like, “keep going”, “finish the word”, etc).
Your Apple video was perfection. Hearing your voice was so powerful. You are, whether you had intended or not, a voice for so many. Like you, my son felt so isolated at worried before he could communicate. Now, his world has burst open with opportunities!

Thank you so much for your openness, and your efforts to educate. Let’s hope our researchers open their minds to the likelihood that there are thousands like you, waiting to find their voices.
